What You'll Need

  • 1 large Mulled Beverages spiced bag
  • For Mulled Wine: 750ml (1 bottle) of red wine (alcoholic or non-alcoholic)
  • For Mulled Cider: 1 litre of apple cider (alcoholic or non-alcoholic)
  • A pot or slow cooker
  • Mugs to serve

How to Brew Your Mulled Beverage

Step 1 — Add Place the large spiced bag into your pot or slow cooker.

Step 2 — Pour Pour in your beverage of choice:

  • Mulled Wine: 750ml (1 bottle) of red wine per large red wine spiced bag
  • Mulled Cider: 1 litre of cider per large cider spiced bag

Step 3 — Heat Warm over a low–medium heat on the stove for 5–10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Alternatively, use a slow cooker on low for 15–30 minutes.

The golden rule: never boil. You want a gentle simmer — steam rising, small bubbles at the edge, but nothing more. Boiling drives off the alcohol and can make your drink bitter.

Step 4 — Taste & Adjust Give it a taste. Want it a little sweeter? Add a teaspoon of honey or brown sugar. Love the citrus notes? Toss in a few fresh orange slices during the last few minutes of heating.

Step 5 — Enjoy Ladle into mugs, find somewhere warm and cosy, and enjoy. 🍷

Tips for the Best Results

  • Stir occasionally during heating to help the spices infuse evenly
  • Leave it longer for a richer, more intense spice flavour — just keep the heat low
  • Fresh orange slices added during heating add a beautiful citrus lift
  • A splash of brandy or port stirred in just before serving adds extra warmth and depth
  • Keep it warm by leaving the pot on the lowest heat setting or the slow cooker on low while serving

Which Wine or Cider Works Best?

For mulled wine, we recommend a full-bodied red with dark fruit flavours — Australian Shiraz, Merlot, Malbec all work beautifully. Aim for something in the $15–$25 range like the McWilliams Samphire Shiraz. It works beautifully with delicious jam notes.

For mulled cider, sweet apple or pear cider works the best — alcoholic or non-alcoholic. A sweet cider balances beautifully with the sweetness of the spices.

If you use a dry cider - add 2-3 teaspoons of brown sugar or other sweetener.
