How to Rim a Cocktail Glass — and the Best Drinks for Every Sugar Rim

A cocktail rim is the quickest way to make a homemade drink look like it came from a professional bar. It takes about ten seconds, it costs next to nothing per glass, and guests always notice it. The trick is knowing how to rim a cocktail glass so it actually sticks — and which rim flavour suits which drink.

Here's our simple method, followed by a pairing guide for every one of our sugar rims.

How to Rim a Cocktail Glass (4 Steps)

Step 1. Run a lime, lemon or orange wedge around the outside edge of your glass. You want it damp, not dripping.

Step 2. Spread a thin layer of rim powder onto a flat plate or rimming bowl, a little wider than your glass.

Step 3. Turn the glass upside down, dip it into the powder and give it a gentle twist and swirl until the rim is evenly coated.

Step 4. Turn it upright and pour your drink carefully into the centre so you don't wash the rim away.

Tips for the perfect rim:

  • Coat the outside of the rim predominately.
  • Try a half rim — coat just half the glass so each sip can choose between enjoying the rim or enjoy the drink straight.
  • Match your wedge to your drink: lime for margaritas and mojitos, lemon or orange for spritzes, and orange for mulled wine, mulled cider and sangria.

Prefer a fancier edge?

Hold the glass almost on its side and run your orange wedge in a 'v' shape up the glass. Then sprinkle the rim powder over the damp edge instead of dipping. The rim becomes light, fluffy and elegantly presented on the side of the glass.

A rim isn't just for cocktails. Pink lemonade with a strawberry rim, sparkling water with tangy lime, or iced tea with zesty lemon all make a non-drinker's glass feel just as special as everyone else's. It's a small touch that means nobody at the party is left holding something plain.

Beyond the Glass

Every rim doubles as a finishing sugar in the kitchen. Dust cinnamon over French toast and baked apples, sprinkle strawberry over pancakes or pavlova, add lemon to shortbread and crêpes, lime to a fruit salad, or gold over cupcakes and macarons.

Whether it's a summer sangria, a New Year's Eve toast or a mug of mulled wine on a cold night, the right rim takes ten seconds and makes the whole drink. At $10 a jar, they also make an easy stocking filler or add-on to a gift.
